Sleep disorders affect more than a third of all adults. There are more than 100 types of sleep disorders.

Did you know that at least a third of adults are affected by sleep disorders? There are more than 100 types of sleep disorders. The most common sleep disorders are; Insomnia, Sleep apnea, Narcolepsy, Restless Legs Syndrome, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder.

circadian rhythm sleep disorder, sleep disorder testThere is a common symptom that these sleep disorders share and that is sleep deprivation. A night of quality deep sleep can do wonders for the mind and body. It is essential for repairing and restoration. Lack of sleep can often result in:

  • Excessive tiredness and yawning throughout the day.
  • Poor concentration and lack of motivation.
  • Decreased productivity.
  • Irritability.
  • Susceptibility to viruses and diseases.
  • Inability to remember things.
  • Tension and headaches.

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder and can be classified as transient, intermittent, and chronic. Insomnia suffers generally complain of:

  • having difficulty falling asleep.
  • having difficulty staying asleep.
  • having difficulty going back to sleep after waking up at night.
  • feeling drowsy or tired on awakening in the morning.
  • feeling excessively tired or sleepy during the day.

Unfortunately insomnia can affect us all regardless of gender, age or race, it does not discriminate. Thousands of accidents a year occur due to falling asleep or loss of concentration, mainly while driving or operating dangerous machinery. Its total cost, in terms of illness, injuries, and decreased quality of life is staggering.

Sleep apnea is a very serious and potentially life-threatening sleep disorder. Untreated, sufferers may stop breathing repeatedly through their sleep, sometimes for a minute or longer. The word ‘apnea’ is a Greek word meaning ‘without breath.’ The sufferer may experience gagging, gasping, or choking which result in frequent awakenings during the night.

Sleep apnea not only causes sleep deprivation and poor quality sleep, untreated it can cause psychological and physical problems. Although it affects more than 12 million adults, sleep apnea remains under-recognized by doctors. However, sleep apnea is treatable with high success.

Losing sleep can cause long-term illness if not treated quickly. Natural alternatives to sleeping pills are not only a cheaper option but in the long term far more affective.

We all have problems sleeping from time to time, the causes are varied and its impact on our daily lives depends on its frequency and severity. There are many over the counter so called sleeping remedies and aids available to buy but these can be expensive and not always affective. It is far better to try and find the root of the problem and to bring your regular sleeping pattern back by using inexpensive natural methods, such as relaxation.

rescue remedy sleep, over the counter sleeping pillsThere are many different problems that could cause you to loss sleep and by acknowledging the cause you can address each one appropriately and far more affectively than by simply popping a pill.

Pain can be a major cause of sleep deprivation and if you are unlucky enough to suffer from some form of chronic pain condition you will find that it will disturb your sleep on a regular basis. A lot of pain medications contain caffeine to help with their effectiveness, unfortunately caffeine will also keep you awake. Taking pain medication earlier in the evening rather than just before bedtime may help to reduce the affects of the caffeine. If your doctor prescribes you some form of pain medication, it might be advisable to ask them if there is an alternative prescription that does not cause wakefulness. Alternatively you may find that taking a warm bath just before bedtime will help to relax you and may help to reduce any pain. Yoga or general stretching exercises may also help to relax the body before bedtime.

Sleep Apnea is a condition where during sleep your breathing may briefly stop due to a closing of the airway. Your body responds to this by waking you up to start you breathing again, usually with sudden load snorting or violent shake. This not only disturbs your sleep but anyone else’s nearby. There are many causes of sleep Apnea, however one of the main known causes is obesity, as the neck area can become restricted during sleep. Losing weight, especially around the neck area will help to reduce this condition and your regular loss of sleep as well as improve your over all health. Losing weight may be a long-term goal but with all its benefits will work out a much cheaper solution than all the various gadgets available to reduce sleep Apnea.

Depression and stress seems to be on the increase and is often sited as another major cause of sleep problems. This in itself will increase the symptoms of stress and depression and you may find yourself in a never-ending downward spiral. Again some medication to help treat depression like Prozac can in them selves cause sleeplessness, so it is always a good idea to speak to your doctor to seek an alternative medication if you are suffering from sleep problems. Relation techniques such as medication and yoga or listening to soft music could help before bedtime to ensure a good nights sleep.

Eating and drinking caffeine drinks late at night is also to be avoided if you are to get a good night sleep. There should be a gap of at least two hours before you go to be after you have eaten. Your body will need this time to process the food and trying to sleep while your body is working away will be impossible. Just think of all the money that you will save in not buying those late night snacks.

Replacing tea and coffee with soft drinks such as water and milk during the evening is a better option, but try not to drink too much before going to bed or you will be up all night visiting the bathroom.

Next time you find yourself unable to sleep, don’t reach for those pills, instead try a more holistic approach and return your body to its natural rhythm in the long term.
